Mastering is very important and final step to an audio production, making it sound at it’s full potential by compression, equalization, , limiting and stereo enhancement. It can be done digitally, and analog with specific hardware.
The term itself comes from the master copy, the polish product, that optimizes playback quality on all devices, offering top feeling, from small speakers to dance floor madness.
Before embarking on your matering jounery, you should know how to prevent wasted time and extra fees, by sending your Pre-Master to the Mastering Engineer in correct format.
What’s the difference between mixing and mastering?
Is about the balance of individual parts or instruments of a song , building a mixdown that has much less volume, ready to flow into mastering process. We could comparing it with a panting, first you draw your sketch, then you bring it to live with color and effects.
So if we imagine a painting canvas, with a perfect sketch, just with the small details left, ready for the last touch drawing perfect shine, shadow or visual stimulent. Back to audio mastering process, Compression corrects and enhances dynamic range of the mix, giving more control over the louder signals and ability to bring up quieter parts for a better overall uniformity and feeling. EQ corrects the spectral imbalances and enhances elements for a well-balanced quality, played on any playback devices.
First step for a correct Pre-Master, is to turn off any limiters/ compressor or EQ , from the master channel. In Romanian underground the volume usually is between -12db to -6db, with the correct mixdown. We also recomand to change your “standard” tone frequency from 440HZ to 432HZ, jumping to the final step of sending your files in format required by your Mastering Engineer.
The preparing process would go like this:
- It’s your job before sending track to mastering, to make sure everything about mixing is done right.
- Export your pre-master with everything off from master channel
- Change tone frequency from 440Hz to 432Hz
- Zip your wav files, this will also protect your transfer
- Send the files to your Mastering Engineer, and enjoy !

*NOTE – when you make the pre-master, volume of master channel must be 0db, and not go louder then -6db by the volume of all other channels.
